I was dreading this morning's 🏊♀️ session. I know. I dread a lot of swims. But there's nothing worse than a time trial in the discipline you hate the most. For me it's usually the fear of failure that I dread. But in reality the TT is simply a benchmark against which we can measure (hopefully) future performance gains. .
I asked my old coach for my last TT result. I was quite surprised at the paces I did back then (18 months ago). But the biggest thing was the gap between my 400m pace and my 200m pace. The calculation of your critical swim speed (CSS) looks at the difference between the two paces to determine your long distance pace. To be honest, in races I swim shit loads faster than I do in the pool. Even over greater distances (how I managed a 1:09 Ironman swim I will NEVER know!).
Still, I had to see where I've got to in the last 18 months. I feel like things are improving, but the only way to know is to do a like-for-like test.
And I smashed it.
Not out of the park. But my 400m pace improved by 4 seconds per 100m. That may not sound like a lot. But it's actually pretty big. Especially when you consider that my last TT was done in a squad so it was a race-like environment. Which generally motivates you to swim faster. This morning I was in a lane on my own.
My 200m pace was only marginally faster than last time, but that meant the gap between the two paces narrowed, and is a great sign that I'm able to maintain my form for a lot longer now. .
All of that meant my CSS pace came right down. I took 7-8 seconds per 100m off that. Which is smashing it in my book.

Headed up to the Severn Road Club 10 Mile timetrial last night. I’m working round the corner so thought I’d give it a go. A new course to me so after signing on I headed off to recce the first few miles as a warm up. Before remembering it was a 6:45pm and not 7pm start! Turned around and raced back to the start with a minute to spare•
Race went ok. I had the course map on my bike computer to make sure I didn’t get lost. Worked ok, except that not knowing the distance I’d covered made pacing the last few miles quite tough. I thought I was approaching the finish, only to realise I still had another 2 miles to go. Just about managed to suppress the desire to quit or puke, and carried on to cross the finish line in 22:45 for 3rd place on the night 🥉•
Great event with lots of organisers, marshals and signage 👏👷🏻♂️⬅️➡️•

With my TT bike on its merry way to Spain for @itupontevedra19 it meant I was on the roadie for last night's time trial - safe to say I missed the speed of my TT bike which gave @jadearooooo the prime opportunity to take the top points! I'll be chasing you down next time 😉
Alarm now set for 2am to start the journey to Pontevedra tomorrow - exciting!! 🇬🇧
Tuesday's Time Trial
So last night I've taken part in the 10miles Time Trial again. Same route as last week, however I went correct way this time 🤣
I am happy with my result (6th out of 27) considering I don't have the proper TT gear.
It's obviously more complicated than that as people taking part in it are different age category, etc.
I used clip on TT bars for the first time officially and I improved significantly.
I am sure I can do better still.

#timetrialtuesday with a throwback to 2009. At 29 years old I was overweight and was a heavy smoker and drinker. I suffered from severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). I was in the redzone and susceptible to a heart attack or a stroke. At the end of 2009 I underwent a procedure to remove my tonsils and uvula to treat my OSA. The recovery was no joke. Up until then, even with a few years of MMA training, I thought I had a high pain tolerance. Recovery exposed me to a new kind of pain. It showed me what my life could have been if I were immobile and bedridden. A slave to unhealthy habits.
Before the operation, my doc ordered me to lose 15 to 20 lbs to be in better shape for my recovery. In my mind it was lose weight or have a stroke. I bought my first road bike and cycled my ass off to shed 20 lbs before going under the knife. I took this pic of a sunset during one of my rides. In 2009 my life changed for the better. I made better choices with my health and mostly quit my bad habits.
I did the work and made a change in my life, because I potentially faced my own mortality. I had to be better for my own sake. Now 10 years later, I'm 5 days away from my 10th Ironman. By the end of the year I'll have completed 12 full Ironman races to enter into the Kona Legacy program. I'm a lucky man to have the ability to train and to race. It's even more special to know that if I can do it, you can too. I've come a long way from this pic of a sunset 10 years ago. Finally rode outside for once! The start of the local racing series with the TT was a great start to the year. Finally tested the setup for St. George 70.3 and posted a nice PR as well. Only 10 days left!

Solid day in the office today at @ironmantri#IM703texas . Swim went very well, rode strong...maybe a little too strong. Didn’t have the run that I wanted, but that’s racing! Always trying to thread the needle. Happy to walk away with 2nd place on the day. Congrats to @tri_starky for the win and to @mattrusselltri for rounding off the podium! On to the next. 📸👉 @dibbo4

I was looking forward to the bike even though my longest ride this year was two hours the weekend before the race 🤫 goal was to settle into a hard pace and hold it for as long as I could. I came close but you can see power dropped hard a little past halfway through. I raced with a two bottle set up and kept all my fluid with some type of electrolyte. I ended up drinking almost four bottles, four gels and a little water for the entire ride, right where I usually end up. Happy with a 2:20 on a hot and windy day.
